The Advantages of Dome Cameras for ANPR

Dome cameras are one of our favourite CCTV styles for ANPR (automatic number plate recognition). The reason for this is threefold.

They have a great zoom capability enabling number plate recognition up to 150 m range, and they have fantastic vandal resistance.

Another advantage of dome cameras is that you can realign them remotely which means that a tweak of the camera angle doesn't require a trip out to the site. It can be simply done by logging in to the Aeroranger edge module.

  • Vandal resistant: If cameras are put in vulnerable locations that are prone to tampering or vandalism, vandal-resistant dome cameras are recommended. Vandal-resistant ratings (for example, IK08 and IK10) may be found on many dome cameras, indicating the degree of mechanical protection. This is because the cameras are completely enclosed, and need special tools to install (and therefore remove).

  • Zoom lenses: Zoom lenses give teams greater control over the camera, allowing them to choose how far away they want the camera to be from the action. The dome shell's design allows for monitoring at a wider angle because the lens has mobility.

  • Weatherproof: Many outdoor domes are built to be weatherproof and water-resistant, allowing them to operate in inclement weather. These outdoor dome cameras are frequently equipped with a rating of IP65, IP66, and IP67. Many security firms provide exterior domes that include integrated temperature gauges and heaters for cameras to work effectively.

Standard CCTV cameras can be upgraded to be ANPR capable with the Aero Ranger module.

Form Factor: Dome cameras may be smaller and lighter than panoramic cameras, and they have a more elegant form factor. They don't need any extra lenses, making them ideal for businesses looking to quickly increase their coverage.

  • Discrete positioning: Because of the dome cover, it may be difficult for casual passers-by to determine which way the camera lens is facing at a distance. This makes it tough for intruders to anticipate which areas are being observed without getting close to the camera, making it an excellent crime prevention and vandalism deterrent.

  • Resolution: The resolution will vary depending on the make and model of the dome camera, however, most manufacturers offer dome cameras with a sufficient resolution for ANPR. Many current video surveillance systems include 3MP (2048 x 1536 pixel) sensor-based dome cameras that can record up to 50% more information than 1080p.

  • Dome cameras often include built-in infrared (IR) illuminators and a progressive CMOS sensor. This combination allows for unrivaled low-light camera performance up to distances of 50 meters or more, with night vision capabilities, in both indoor and outdoor settings.
